The Lumitester Smart is a handheld hygiene monitor used to verify that cleaning has actually worked. A swab is taken from a surface, an instrument or an endoscope channel, inserted into the reader, and a result appears in ten seconds as an RLU value. A high reading means residue remains and the cleaning was insufficient; a low reading means it was adequate.
What separates the Kikkoman A3 system from a conventional ATP test is what it detects. Contaminants in a medical facility — blood, body fluids, excrement, microorganisms — contain ATP, but also ADP and AMP, which are produced as ATP breaks down. A test that measures only ATP misses those, and misses them precisely where contamination is oldest or has been through heat or drying. The A3 method detects all three.
Sterifag supplies this system as a partner of Kikkoman Biochemifa Company for the healthcare sector in India. The Lumitester, LuciPac and LuciSwab products are manufactured by Kikkoman Biochemifa Company, Japan, and those names are their trademarks. We handle supply, training and ongoing consumables.
- Hand hygiene, education and monitoring — swab the palm of the dominant hand over five to ten passes, left to right and top to bottom, including between fingers and fingertips. Makes handwashing training visible rather than theoretical.
- Environmental cleaning and monitoring — bed rails, door handles, overbed tables, nurse call buttons, IV poles, stethoscopes, keyboards, touch panels and trolleys. Focuses attention on the frequently-touched surfaces where cross-infection risk is highest.
- Instrument and CSSD cleaning evaluation — surgical instruments with uneven surfaces, box locks and complex designs, tested after cleaning in the dried state.
- Endoscope cleaning verification — biopsy and suction ports, air and water channels, forceps elevator and distal end. Monitoring after manual cleaning is recommended.
- Dialysis — coupler connectors.
- Hospital food service — knives, cutting boards, handles and preparation surfaces.
These are the reference values published by the manufacturer. Each facility should conduct its own validation and establish its own pass and fail limits.

Storage. LuciPac A3 at 2–8 °C, do not freeze. Unopened, it holds 14 days at 25 °C or 5 days at 30 °C. Expiry is 15 months from manufacture. LuciSwab is stored at room temperature, protected from high temperature and humidity.
Allow LuciPac to reach room temperature, 20–35 °C, for 20 minutes before use. Use LuciPac A3 with the Lumitester Smart, PD-30 or PD-20 only.
Surface test. Moisten the swab with tap water — not saline — and swab the sample area. Return the swab to the body and push it down. Shake until the liquid reagent slides down and dissolves the powdered reagent. Insert the LuciPac into the Lumitester chamber and take the measurement, then remove it once complete.
Endoscope channel test. Wearing powder-free gloves, cut the LuciSwab bag from the notch and remove the swab without letting the tip touch anything. Moisten with tap water if the endoscope is dry. Insert from the channel, push the stem through and withdraw from the distal end. Holding the LuciSwab 12–13 cm from the cotton bud, remove the sampling stick and transfer it into the LuciPac, breaking the aluminium seal carefully. Shake to dissolve the reagent and measure.
Results may not be valid where disinfectant or detergent remains on the surface.
- The Lumitester is not a medical device, and the system is intended for hygiene monitoring only.
- LuciPac A3 and Lumitester Smart are not for counting general living bacteria or detecting specific pathogens.
- Always remove the LuciPac A3 Surface from the Lumitester once a measurement is complete. Leaving it in the instrument risks the fluid leaking and damaging it.
- Use LuciSwab together with LuciPac. Other cotton swabs and reagents will not give accurate results.
- Do not use LuciSwab where the area is narrower than the swab diameter — the cotton bud may detach or become stuck.
